Entomology courses

The Field Studies Council organises various entomological courses, for beginners and more experienced entomologists: http://www.field-studies-council.org

However, in order to pursue entomology as a career in the UK, it is necessary to obtain a good degree in a science subject (usually biological sciences) and then take an MSc or PhD. The following universities are currently offering MSc courses in entomology:

MSc by Research Entomology - The University of Reading

There is an acute shortage of qualified entomologists in the UK, hence the excellent employment record of students graduating from this course. The University of Reading has several well-known entomologists working on insect taxonomy, biodiversity, applied aspects, and ecology. We have a number of national recorders and Reading entomologists have discovered several species of insect new to science. Students will study in our large, dedicated entomology laboratory. There is no overlap with undergraduate and postgraduate students on other courses. Student learning is assessed via assessments absolutely fit for purpose with no centrally organised examinations. An aspiration is to publish student project work in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

The course will:

Invertebrate Ecology and Conservation (MSc, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma) - Staffordshire University

No other specialist MSc course exists on invertebrate ecology and conservation. This course covers freshwater and terrestrial invertebrates, but excludes marine invertebrates

Invertebrates make up about 99% of the global fauna, but have been largely ignored in conservation efforts and in ecological impact assessments of new developments. Over the last decade the plight of invertebrates has become better known and there is now more demand for consultants with expertise in both aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates (especially insects).

The course shares several modules with other postgraduate Ecology and Conservation courses at Staffordshire because there are some key areas of knowledge and skills that anyone working in ecology and conservation needs. So, whilst you will share some subjects such as 'Managing Terrestrial Habitats' and 'Managing the Consequences of Climate Change' with students from other courses, your assignments will be tailored to your course interests. Being a specialist though you will have modules that no other course takes: 'Invertebrate Conservation Management' and 'Invertebrate Taxonomy and Specialist Identification' and these together with your individual Research Project (if you are taking an MSc) will truly make your course unique.

The course is designed for recent graduates in biological or environmental sciences who are keen on invertebrates and who hope to move into conservation-related careers, and for people currently working in conservation, consultancy, and land management who want to upgrade their professional qualifications.

MSc Medical Parasitology - Oxford University

This course aims to:

  1. provide core training in the theoretical and practical aspects of medical parasitology, covering the protozoan and metazoan parasites of humans and the vectors which transmit them, and
  2. equip students with specialised skills to enable them to pursue a career in research, control or teaching related to medical parasitology. Specialised study units are chosen from a list of diverse topics ranging, for example, from Practical Training in Gene Cloning, to Advanced Diagnostic Parasitology and to Methods of Vector Control.

Graduates from this course go into fields ranging from diagnostics through to applied basic research and operational control to higher degree studies and academic/teaching-related positions.

The Patrick Buxton Memorial Medal and Prize is awarded to the best student of the year. Founded by relatives of Patrick Alfred Buxton, Professor in Entomology, who died in 1955.

Entomology - University of Nebraska, Lincoln

The distance master's degree in entomology is designed for site-bound students who could not otherwise pursue an advanced degree. This non-research based degree program emphasizes work in entomology and flexibility in non-entomological training specific to individual student needs and interests. Potential audiences for this degree include crop consultants, science teachers, farmers, vocational agriculture instructors, agriculturalists (such as co-operative, seed or chemical company employees) and workers in environmental protection and conservation organizations. This is a completely online degree so you can take the course from wherever you are in the world.
